Oliver!

I enjoy performing to a large audience and I thought it would help to build up my confidence.

On Wednesday 30th and Thursday 31st March 2011 KESH Academy performed the musical Oliver! The cast included students of all ages, ranging from year 7 all the way up to year 13. The students had worked hard over many months rehearsing with the Performing Arts faculty three nights a week and even came in on a Saturday for a full dress rehearsal! The students worked fantastically well as a team, supporting each other throughout the process by learning lines together and even singing along with the songs from the wings. The performance told the story of a young boy from a workhouse called Oliver who is sold to a funeral director after he has had the audacity to ask Mr Bumble, the Beadle of the workhouse, for more gruel. Oliver escapes and goes to London where he meets Jack Dawkins, otherwise known as the Artful Dodger, who introduces him to an eccentric old man called Fagin who looks after a troop of pick pockets.

In the care of Dodger and Fagin Oliver is able to make some good friends and find a new life for himself. The students worked extremely hard on the show and should be very proud of their achievements. The play demanded a range of talents from our cast who had to sing, dance as well as learn all their lines. We would like to thank all of the staff from around the school who helped us get the production ready and all the families of the cast who we know have been supporting the performers at home.

Most importantly we want to thank the cast themselves who have been a pleasure to work with throughout the process!

Rousing performance at Old Rep!

{jcomments off}On Monday 11th October a small group of dedicated and talented Y8 and Y9 students performed a 30 minute version of THE TEMPEST at the Old Rep Theatre in Birmingham City Centre as part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival. Superbly cast, organised and directed by Mrs Jessett, the group were a real credit to our Academy and received very positive praise from the festival organisers and audience.

It was a great production, with so much attention to detail, teamwork and raw talent.

The use of make-up and costumes helped place the characters in the right worlds and make the story clear and accessible to the audience.

Rock Challenge success

On 21st April, 78 students and 9 staff took part in the 2009 Be Your Best Foundation ROCK CHALLENGE. ROCK CHALLENGE is a national Dance/Drama competition, where entrants had to create an original piece of work lasting no more than eight minutes. Our theme this year was Territory; your space, my space, who belongs where and what if you want to be someone different? Don't be afraid of the unexpected! You never know what’s waiting for you. The performance highlighted the pressure young people face to be themselves, rather than follow the pack.

Students from Y10 Btec Dance led workshops and rehearsals for younger students, the Art Club supported the project by making masks and props, participants attended costume making workshops and students in Year 9 raised awareness of the Natural High message by creating posters and a short film about the project. The performance was premiered at the Spring Concert and was well received in Derby receiving the following awards:

7 awards to Sheldon Heath

7 awards to Sheldon HeathBest Lighting Design

7 awards to Sheldon HeathBest Soundtrack

7 awards to Sheldon HeathBest Original Concept

7 awards to Sheldon HeathBest Hair and Make-Up
