Why study Sociology?

You will already hold some views on issues such as culture, identity, education, the mass media and crime. In studying sociology you will have a chance to examine these views critically and to look at alternative viewpoints.

How is sociology taught?

We aim to encourage the active participation of our students through discussion and debate. Extensive use is also made of the Internet, DVDs and news articles. Students are expected to be independent learners, to carry out their own research, to read, to write essays and to deliver presentations.

Assessment

AS = One 1 hour exam (Culture and Identity) and one 2 hour exam (Education and Research Methods)
A2 = One 1 ½ hour exam (Mass Media) and one 2 hour exam (Crime and Deviance; Theory and Methods)

What do students say?

Sociology is an interesting subject which helps you to understand society. It gets you thinking and leads to a lot of debates within the class.

I found Sociology confusing at first but once you get used to the terms used it all becomes clear. It helps you to understand that everybody has a different perspective.
