What is the course about?

If you would like to develop your ability to reason logically, construct proofs and extend your range of Mathematical skills then this is the A Level for you. You will have opportunities to recognise how situations may be represented mathematically and understand how they relate to ‘real life’ problems.

Where can this course lead?

Mathematicians are highly employable and are employed in fields of work as diverse as games developing, radio producing, sports technology, medical research, finance, computer programming, engineering, air traffic control and environmental research. Mathematics qualifications are also useful in teaching, management and professional careers.

Areas of study during Year 12 include: Indices and surds; Polynomials; Coordinate geometry and graphs; Differentiation; Trigonometry; Sequences and series; Algebra; Integration and an Applied Maths unit.

Areas of study during Year 13 include: Algebra and functions; Trigonometry; Differentiation and integration; Numerical methods, Algebra and graphs; Differentiation and integration; Differential equations; Vectors and an Applied Maths unit.

How will I be assessed?

In both years you will take two modules and one applications module. Assessment in all modules is by a one and a half hour examination.

What else do I need to know?

The course is taught using a variety of teaching and learning styles including computer based learning. You must be committed to working at a consistently high level throughout the course as well as being very organised and motivated to learn new techniques and methods. Students are expected to regularly practise the skills they learn in lessons.
